Monopteros
Un monopteros est une colonnade circulaire soutenant un toit mais sans murs. Contrairement à un tholos, il n'a pas de cella. En antiquité grecque et surtout romaine, le terme pourrait également être utilisé pour un tholos. Dans les temps anciens, les monopteroi servaient entre autres comme une forme de baldaquin pour une idole. Un exemple de ceci est le Monument de Lysicrates à Athènes, bien que les espaces entre les colonnes aient été clos, même dans les temps anciens. Le temple de Rome et Augustus sur l'Acropole d'Athènes est un monopteros de l'époque romaine avec des espaces ouverts entre les colonnes. Cyriacus von Ancona, voyageur du XVe siècle, a transmis son inscription architrave: Ad praefatae Palladis Templi vestibulum. Dans l'architecture baroque et classiciste, les monopteros comme un temple de "muses" est un motif populaire dans les jardins anglais et français. Les monopteros se produisent également dans les parcs allemands, bien qu'il ne soit généralement que de quatre à huit colonnes. Un plus grand nombre de colonnes sont plus rares. Les monopteros dans le jardin anglais de Munich et un temple dans le parc Hayns à Hambourg-Eppendorf sont des exemples bien connus. De nombreux puits dans les parcs et les centres de spa ont l'apparence d'un monopteros.
