L'histoire naturelle est la recherche et l'étude d'organismes, y compris les plantes ou les animaux dans leur environnement, en se penchant davantage sur les méthodes d'étude observationnelles que expérimentales. Par exemple, la géobiologie a une forte nature multidisciplinaire combinant des scientifiques et des connaissances scientifiques de nombreuses sciences spécialisées. Une personne qui étudie l'histoire naturelle est connue comme naturaliste ou «historien naturel».
