Un plan d'eau, comme une rivière, un canal ou un lac, est navigable s'il est profond, large et assez lent pour qu'un navire passe. De préférence, il y a peu d'obstructions telles que les roches ou les arbres à éviter. Les ponts doivent avoir une autorisation suffisante. La vitesse élevée de l'eau peut rendre un canal inoubliable. Les eaux peuvent être inavigables en raison de la glace, en particulier en hiver. La navigabilité dépend du contexte: une petite rivière peut être navigable par des embarcations plus petites, comme un bateau à moteur ou un kayak, mais non navigables par un bateau de croisière. Les rivières peu profondes peuvent être rendues navigables par l'installation de verrous qui augmentent et régulent la profondeur de l'eau, ou par dragage.
