En chimie, un non métallique ou non métallique est un élément chimique qui ne présente plus d'attributs métalliques. Physiquement, les non-métaux ont tendance à être très volatils, à faible élasticité et sont de bons isolateurs de chaleur et d'électricité; Chimiquement, ils ont tendance à avoir une haute énergie d'ionisation et des valeurs d'électronégativité, et gagner ou partager des électrons lorsqu'ils réagissent avec d'autres éléments ou des composés. Dix-sept éléments sont généralement classés comme non-métalliques; La plupart sont des gaz; L'un est un liquide; Et quelques-uns sont solides. En se déplaçant vers la droite à travers la forme standard du tableau périodique, les non-métaux adoptent des structures qui ont progressivement moins de voisins les plus proches. Les non-métalliques polyatomiques ont des structures avec soit trois voisins les plus proches, comme c'est le cas avec le carbone, ou deux voisins les plus proches dans le cas du soufre. Cette baisse graduelle du nombre de voisins les plus proches est associée à une réduction du caractère métallique et à une augmentation du caractère non métallique.
