Il se trouve au milieu des Pennines sur un terrain élevé entre les rivières Irk et Medlock, à 8,5 km au sud-sud-est de Rochdale et à 6,9 milles au nord-est de la ville de Manchester. Oldham est entouré de plusieurs petites villes qui forment ensemble l'arrondissement métropolitain d'Oldham, dont Oldham est le centre administratif. Historiquement au Lancashire, et avec peu de début d'histoire à parler, Oldham a pris de l'importance au 19ème siècle en tant que centre international de fabrication textile. C'était une boomtown de la révolution industrielle, et parmi les premières villes industrialisées, devenant rapidement «l'un des centres les plus importants du coton et des industries textiles en Angleterre».
