Couche d'ozone
La couche d'ozone se réfère à une région de la stratosphère terrestre qui absorbe la plupart des rayons UV du Soleil. Il contient de fortes concentrations d'ozone par rapport à d'autres parties de l'atmosphère, même si elle est encore très petite par rapport aux autres gaz de la stratosphère. La couche d'ozone contient moins de dix parties par million d'ozone, tandis que la concentration moyenne d'ozone dans l'atmosphère de la Terre dans son ensemble n'est que d'environ 0,3 partie par million. La couche d'ozone se trouve principalement dans la partie inférieure de la stratosphère, d'environ 20 à 30 kilomètres au-dessus de la Terre, bien que l'épaisseur varie de façon saisonnière et géographique. La couche d'ozone a été découverte en 1913 par les physiciens français Charles Fabry et Henri Buisson. Ses propriétés ont été explorées en détail par le météorologue britannique G. M. B. Dobson, qui a développé un spectrophotomètre simple qui pourrait être utilisé pour mesurer l'ozone stratosphérique du sol. Entre 1928 et 1958, Dobson a créé un réseau mondial de stations de surveillance de l'ozone, qui continuent d'opérer jusqu'à ce jour. L'unité "Dobson", une mesure pratique de la quantité de frais généraux d'ozone, est nommée en son honneur.
