Un patriarcat est le bureau ou la juridiction d'un patriarche. Un patriarche, tel que le terme est utilisé ici, est l'un des deux évêques de haut rang de l'orthodoxie orientale, plus tôt, les cinq qui ont été inclus dans la Pentarchie: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandrie, Antioche et Jérusalem; Mais maintenant neuf, à l'exclusion de Rome et incluant les patriarches de Moscou, de Serbie, de Roumanie, de Bulgarie et de Géorgie; Ou ▪ l'un des dix évêques de haut rang du catholicisme: sept «patriarches de l'est» et les patriarches de Lisbonne, de Venise et des Indes orientales; Ou ▪ l'un des patriarches spécifiques de l'orthodoxie orientale et de l'église de l'Est. Les cinq patriarches de la Pentarchie étaient assis à Rome, à Constantinople, à Alexandrie, à Antioche et à Jérusalem. Le schisme de l'est-ouest de 1054 a divisé le latin latin de Rome des quatre patriarchats de langue grecque, formant des églises catholiques et orthodoxes orientales distinctes. Le patriarche orthodoxe oriental d'Antioche a déménagé à Damas au 13ème siècle, sous le règne des Mamelouks égyptiens, conquérants de la Syrie.
