Phosphorescence
La phosphorescence est un type spécifique de photoluminescence liée à la fluorescence. Contrairement à la fluorescence, un matériau phosphorescent ne réémette pas immédiatement le rayonnement qu'il absorbe. Les échelles de temps plus lentes de la ré-émission sont associées à des transitions d'état d'énergie «interdites» dans la mécanique quantique. Comme ces transitions se produisent très lentement dans certains matériaux, les rayonnements absorbés peuvent être réémis à une intensité inférieure pendant plusieurs heures après l'excitation initiale. Des exemples fréquemment vus de matériaux phosphorescents sont les jouets, les peintures et les horloges brillant dans le noir qui brillent pendant un certain temps après avoir été chargés d'une lumière brillante, comme dans n'importe quelle lumière normale ou de la lumière. Typiquement, l'incandescence s'efface lentement en quelques minutes dans une pièce sombre. L'étude des matériaux phosphorescents a conduit à la découverte de la radioactivité en 1896. Ironiquement, le phosphore blanc ne présente pas réellement cette propriété, mais plutôt la chimioluminescence.
