Polybe
Polybe était un historien grec de la période hellénistique noté pour son travail, The Histories, qui couvrait en détail la période 264-146 av. J.-C. Le travail décrit la montée de la République romaine dans le «pouvoir mondial». Polybe est également réputé pour ses idées concernant la séparation des pouvoirs au sein du gouvernement, plus tard utilisé dans l'Esprit des lois de Montesquieu et dans la rédaction de la Constitution des États-Unis. Polybe est né à Arcadia vers 200 av. Il était le fils de Lycortas, un politicien grec qui est devenu Cavalier Commandant de la Ligue Achaean. L'opposition de son père au contrôle romain de la Macédoine a entraîné son emprisonnement. Polybe fut ensuite déporté vers Rome, où Lucius Aemilius Paulus l'employa pour taire ses deux fils. Polybe a eu l'opportunité de retourner en Macédoine en 152 av. Il a choisi de rester, cependant, à Rome, alors qu'il avait placé son allégeance dans la République romaine à cette époque. Il est devenu un ami proche du commandant militaire romain Scipio Aemilianus, accompagnant le général à Hispania et à l'Afrique.
