La personne qui guide une cause de béatification ou de canonisation à travers les processus judiciaires exigés par l'Église catholique romaine est connue comme le postulateur. Les qualifications, le rôle et la fonction du postulateur sont énoncés dans les Normes à observer dans les enquêtes faites par les évêques dans les causes des saints, qui est en vigueur depuis le 7 février 1983. Un pétitionnaire qui demande la béatification peut nommer comme postulateur, Clerc ou non, spécialiste des questions théologiques, canoniques et historiques, et versé dans la pratique de la Congrégation pour les Causes des Saints, sous réserve de l'approbation de l'évêque. Les ordres religieux majeurs, comme les franciscains, les dominicains et les jésuites, désignent des membres de leurs ordres en tant que postulateurs généraux qui sont disponibles pour agir pour les pétitionnaires dans les causes et qui développent la réputation en tant qu'experts dans leur domaine. La dernière étape d'une cause exige que le postulateur réside à Rome, ce qui favorise également l'attribution du rôle du postulateur à un tel postulateur général, puisque la plupart des ordres religieux maintiennent leur siège à Rome.
