En écologie, la prédation est une interaction biologique où un prédateur se nourrit de sa proie. Les prédateurs peuvent ou non tuer leurs proies avant de se nourrir, mais l'acte de prédation entraîne souvent la mort de sa proie et l'absorption éventuelle du tissu de la proie par la consommation. D'autres catégories de consommation sont l'herbivorité, la mycophagie et le détriment, la consommation de matière organique morte. Toutes ces catégories de consommation relèvent des systèmes de ressources grand public. Il est souvent difficile de séparer divers types de comportements d'alimentation. Par exemple, certaines espèces parasites se précipitent sur un organisme hôte, puis posent leurs oeufs pour que leur progéniture s'en nourrisse pendant qu'elle continue de vivre ou sur son cadavre en décomposition après sa mort. La principale caractéristique de la prédation est cependant l'impact direct du prédateur sur la population de proies. En revanche, les détritivores mangent simplement du matériel organique mort issu de la désintégration des individus morts et n'ont aucun impact direct sur l'organisme «donneur». Les pressions sélectives imposées les unes aux autres conduisent souvent à une course d'armement évolutive entre la proie et le prédateur, entraînant diverses adaptations antipédatrices.
