Une préface ou un proem, est une introduction à un livre ou à une autre œuvre littéraire rédigée par l'auteur du travail. Un essai introductif écrit par une personne différente est un avant-propos et précède la préface d'un auteur. La préface se ferme souvent avec des remerciements de ceux qui ont assisté à l'œuvre littéraire. Une préface couvre généralement l'histoire de la création du livre, ou comment l'idée du livre a été développée; Ceci est souvent suivi de remerciements et de remerciements aux personnes qui ont été utiles à l'auteur au moment de l'écriture. Une préface est habituellement signée; Un avant-propos d'une autre personne est toujours signé.
