La préhistoire est la période qui précède l'histoire enregistrée ou l'invention des systèmes d'écriture. La préhistoire se réfère à la période de l'existence humaine avant la disponibilité des enregistrements écrits avec lesquels l'histoire enregistrée commence. Plus largement, il peut se référer tout le temps précédant l'existence humaine et l'invention de l'écriture.
