Présélection
La présélection est le processus par lequel un candidat est sélectionné, généralement par un parti politique, pour disputer une élection pour un poste politique. Il est également appelé sélection des candidats. C'est une fonction fondamentale des partis politiques. Dans les pays qui adoptent un gouvernement responsable de style Westminster, la présélection est également la première étape sur la voie d'un poste dans l'exécutif. La désélection est la procédure inverse: le parti politique retire le soutien de l'un de ses titulaires élus lors d'une élection ultérieure. Le parti peut alors sélectionner un nouveau candidat de remplacement, ou il peut décider de renoncer à contester ce siège. Le représentant désélectionné est généralement libre de continuer à disputer l'élection en tant qu'indépendant ou en tant que représentant d'une autre partie. Un exemple de procédure de présélection qui accueille une couverture médiatique étendue est la sélection de candidats à la présidence des États-Unis, dont un observateur est considéré comme «le bazar politique démocratique le plus sauvage au monde».
