Pretorius est un nom commun afrikaans. La famille a l'ascendance hollandaise et indienne: deux esclaves de l'Inde de l'Est, Catharina van Bengale et Helena van Malabar sont des ancêtres. Enregistré sous plusieurs formes (y compris Praetor, Praetorius, Pratorius, Pretorius, (allemand) et Preater anglais, Preter et Pretor), Pretorius est un surnom d'origine germanique bien que l'origine ultime soit le mot romain (latin) "préteur". Ce chef littéralement signifié, mais a été utilisé dans la Rome impériale pour décrire les officiels qui dirigent les processions, ainsi que la garde prétorienne qui a assuré la sécurité du Sénat et de la famille royale.
