Pseudocopulation
La pseudocopulation décrit des comportements semblables à la copulation qui servent une fonction de reproduction pour un ou les deux participants, mais ne comportent pas d'union sexuelle réelle entre les individus. Il est généralement appliqué à un pollinisateur essayant de copuler avec une fleur. Certaines fleurs imitent une femme femelle potentielle visuellement, mais les stimuli clés sont souvent chimiques et tactiles. Cette forme de mimique dans les plantes s'appelle le mimétisme de Pouyannian. Les orchidées réalisent généralement une reproduction de cette manière, sécrétant des produits chimiques des glandes appelés osmophores situés dans les sépales, les pétales ou le labellum, qui ne se distinguent pas par les phéromones naturelles des insectes. Le pollinisateur a alors un pollinium attaché à son corps, qu'il transfère au stigmate d'une autre fleur lorsqu'il tente une autre «copulation». Les pollinateurs sont souvent des abeilles et des guêpes de l'ordre des Hyménoptères et des mouches. Le coût pour les insectes pollinisants pourrait être considéré comme négligeable, mais l'étude des pollinisateurs Cryptostylis montre qu'ils peuvent gaspiller de grandes quantités de sperme en éjaculant sur la fleur.
