L'échantillonnage des quotas est une méthode de sélection des participants au sondage. Dans l'échantillonnage des quotas, une population est segmentée pour la première fois en sous-groupes mutuellement exclusifs, tout comme dans l'échantillonnage stratifié. Ensuite, le jugement est utilisé pour sélectionner les sujets ou les unités de chaque segment en fonction d'une proportion spécifiée. Par exemple, on peut dire à un intervieweur d'échantillonner 200 femelles et 300 mâles entre 45 et 60 ans. Cela signifie que les individus peuvent exiger de ceux qu'ils souhaitent analyser. Cette deuxième étape rend l'échantillonnage non probabiliste technique. Dans l'échantillonnage des quotas, il existe une sélection d'échantillons non aléatoire et cela peut être peu fiable. Par exemple, les intervieweurs pourraient être tentés d'interroger les personnes dans la rue qui semblent les plus utiles ou choisir d'utiliser un échantillonnage accidentel pour interroger les personnes les plus proches d'elles, pour un bien-être. Le problème est que ces échantillons peuvent être biaisés parce que tout le monde n'a pas le choix. Cet élément non aléatoire est une source d'incertitude quant à la nature de l'échantillon réel et le quota versus la probabilité est une question de controverse depuis de nombreuses années.
