Krameria
Krameria est le seul genre dans la famille des Krameriaceae, dont l'une des environ 17 espèces est communément appelée Rhatany, ratany ou rattany. Rhatany est également le nom donné à la racine de krameria, un remède botanique composé de la racine séchée du para rhatany ou du rhatany péruvien. L'action biologique de la rhatanie est causée par l'acide rhataniatannique astringent, qui est similaire à l'acide tannique. Les infusions ont été utilisées comme un gargarisme, une pastille, surtout lorsqu'elles sont mélangées avec de la cocaïne, en tant qu'hémastique local et remède contre la diarrhée. Lorsqu'ils étaient finement en poudre, les racines séchées fournissaient un constituant fréquent des poudres dentaires. Les racines en poudre ont également servi, surtout au Portugal, à colorier des vins en rouge rubis. L'écorce de la racine contient une substance rouge libre presque insoluble appelée rouge ratanhia. Krameria se trouve dans les Amériques, avec la plupart des régions indigènes dans les régions tropicales. Ce sont des arbustes vivaces qui agissent comme des parasites radiculaires sur d'autres plantes. Les fleurs ont des glandes appelées elaiophores qui produisent un lipide qui est collecté par les abeilles du genre Centris alors qu'elles pollinisent les fleurs.
