Les rouleaux sont une famille du Vieux Monde, les Coraciidae, des oiseaux près de passerine. Le groupe tire son nom des acrobaties aériennes que certains de ces oiseaux effectuent lors de la cour ou des vols territoriaux. Les rouleaux ressemblent à des corbeaux en taille et à la construction, et partagent l'apparence colorée des martins-pêcheurs et des abeilleurs, des bleus et des marrons rosés ou à la cannelle prédominant. Les deux orteils avant intérieurs sont connectés, mais pas l'extérieur. Ils sont principalement des mangeurs d'insectes, avec des espèces d'Eurystomus prenant leur proie sur l'aile, et celles du genre Coracias qui plongent à partir d'une perche pour attraper des aliments sur le sol, comme des canailles géantes. Bien que les rouleaux vivants soient des oiseaux de climats chauds dans l'Ancien Monde, les enregistrements fossiles montrent que les rouleaux étaient présents en Amérique du Nord pendant l'Eocène. Ils sont monogames et nichent dans un trou sans doublure dans un arbre ou en maçonnerie, et posent 2-4 œufs dans les régions tropicales, 3-6 à latitudes supérieures. Les œufs, blancs, éclosent après 17-20 jours, et les jeunes restent dans le nid pendant environ 30 jours environ.
