Un diagramme schématique ou schématique est une représentation des éléments d'un système utilisant des symboles abstraits et graphiques plutôt que des images réalistes. Un schéma omite habituellement tous les détails qui ne sont pas pertinents pour les informations que le schéma est destiné à transmettre, et peut ajouter des éléments irréalistes qui aident la compréhension. Par exemple, une carte de métro destinée aux coureurs peut représenter une station de métro dotée d'un point; Le point ne ressemble pas à la station actuelle mais donne l'information du téléspectateur sans encombrement visuel inutile. Un diagramme schématique d'un processus chimique utilise des symboles pour représenter les navires, les tuyauteries, les vannes, les pompes et autres équipements du système, en mettant l'accent sur leurs chemins d'interconnexion et en supprimant les détails physiques. Dans un schéma de circuit électronique, la disposition des symboles peut ne pas ressembler à la mise en page dans le circuit physique. Dans le diagramme schématique, les éléments symboliques sont agencés pour être plus facilement interprétés par le spectateur. Schéma et autres types de diagrammes, par exemple, un diagramme semi-schématique combine une partie de l'abstraction d'un diagramme purement schématique avec d'autres éléments affichés aussi réaliste que possible, pour diverses raisons.
