Scrapie
La tremblante est une maladie mortelle et dégénérative qui affecte le système nerveux des moutons et des chèvres. C'est l'une des nombreuses encéphalopathies spongiformes transmissibles, qui sont liées à l'encéphalopathie spongiforme bovine et à la maladie de dépérissement chronique des cerfs. Comme d'autres encéphalopathies spongiformes, la tremblante est causée par un prion. La tremblante est connue depuis 1732 et ne semble pas être transmissible aux humains. Le nom de tremblante est dérivé de l'un des signes cliniques de l'état, dans lequel les animaux affectés raviront compulsivement leurs toiles contre les roches, les arbres ou les clôtures. La maladie provoque apparemment une sensation de démangeaison chez les animaux. D'autres signes cliniques incluent un gonflement excessif des lèvres, des allures altérées et un effondrement convulsif. La tremblante est infectieuse et transmissible chez les adultes, de sorte que l'une des manières les plus courantes de la contenir est de mettre en quarantaine et de détruire les personnes touchées. Cependant, le tremblement de terre a tendance à persister dans les troupeaux et peut également apparaître apparemment spontanément dans des troupeaux qui n'ont pas eu auparavant des cas de maladie.
