Alphabet
Un alphabet est un jeu de lettres standard qui est utilisé pour écrire une ou plusieurs langues en fonction du principe général selon lequel les lettres représentent des phonèmes de la langue parlée. Cela contraste avec d'autres types de systèmes d'écriture, tels que les syllabaires et les logographies. Un véritable alphabet a des lettres pour les voyelles d'une langue ainsi que les consonnes. Le premier «véritable alphabet» dans ce sens est censé être l'alphabet grec, qui est une forme modifiée de l'alphabet phénicien. Dans les autres types d'alphabet, les voyelles ne sont pas indiquées, comme c'est le cas dans l'alphabet phénicien, ou les voyelles sont montrées par les diacritiques ou la modification des consonnes, comme dans le devanagari utilisé en Inde et au Népal. De nombreuses langues utilisent des formes modifiées de l'alphabet latin, avec des lettres supplémentaires formées à l'aide de marques diacritiques. Bien que la plupart des alphabets contiennent des lettres composées de lignes, il existe aussi des exceptions telles que les alphabets utilisés en Braille, le fingerpage et le code Morse. Les alphabets sont généralement associés à une commande standard de leurs lettres.
