Une étoile de coquille, également appelée variable Gamma Cassiopeiae, est une étoile ayant un spectre qui présente des caractéristiques indiquant un disque circumstellaire de gaz entourant l'étoile à l'équateur. Ils présentent des variations irrégulières dans leur luminosité en raison de la sortie de matière. Les étoiles de coquille sont des rotateurs rapides, donnant une explication partielle sur le mécanisme, mais les étoiles de coquille sont toujours considérées comme énigmatiques. Les étoiles Shell appartiennent aux types spectraux O7.5 à F5, mais leurs spectres sont caractérisés par des lignes d'absorption énormément élargies en raison de la rotation rapide et du disque qui contribue également à d'autres particularités spectrales. Les vitesses de rotation sont d'environ 200-250 km / s, pas loin du point où l'accélération de rotation perturberait l'étoile.
