Le vin mousseux est un vin avec des niveaux significatifs de dioxyde de carbone en le rendant pétillant. Le dioxyde de carbone peut résulter de la fermentation naturelle, soit dans une bouteille, comme avec la méthode champenoise, dans un grand réservoir conçu pour résister aux pressions impliquées ou à la suite de l'injection de dioxyde de carbone. Le vin mousseux est généralement blanc ou rosé, mais il existe de nombreux exemples de vins mousseux rouges tels que Brachetto italien et Shiraz pétillant australien. La douceur du vin mousseux peut aller de styles "brut" très secs à des variétés plus doux "doux". L'exemple classique d'un vin mousseux est le Champagne, mais ce vin est exclusivement produit dans la région Champagne de France et de nombreux vins mousseux sont produits dans d'autres pays et régions, comme Espumante au Portugal, Cava en Espagne, Franciacorta, Trento DOC, Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico et Asti en Italie et Cap Classique en Afrique du Sud. La plupart des pays réservent le mot Champagne pour un type spécifique de la région Champagne-Ardenne. Les termes français "Mousseux" ou "Crémant" sont utilisés pour désigner des vins mousseux non fabriqués dans la région Champagne.
