La génération spontanée est une pensée obsolète sur la formation ordinaire d'organismes vivants sans descente d'organismes similaires. En règle générale, l'idée était que certaines formes telles que les puces pourraient résulter d'une matière inanimée telle que de la poussière, ou que des larves pourraient résulter d'une chair morte. Une idée variante était celle d'une génération équivoque, dans laquelle des espèces telles que des ténias provenaient d'organismes vivants non apparentés, maintenant considérés comme leurs hôtes. Les doctrines soutenant de tels processus de génération présentaient que ces processus sont monnaie courante et régulière. De telles idées sont en contradiction avec celles de la génération univoque: une reproduction effectivement exclusive de parents génétiquement apparentés, généralement de la même espèce. La doctrine de la génération spontanée a été synthétisée de manière cohérente par Aristote, qui a compilé et développé le travail des philosophes naturels antérieurs et les diverses anciennes explications de l'apparition des organismes; Il a dominé pendant deux millénaires.
