Les taches de taches solaires sont très difficiles à détecter sur d'autres étoiles car elles sont trop petites pour provoquer des fluctuations de luminosité détectables. Les pôles d'étoiles observés sont en général beaucoup plus grands que ceux du Soleil: jusqu'à environ 30% de la surface stellaire peuvent être couverts, ce qui correspond à des satellites 100 fois plus grands que ceux du Soleil.
