Stomate
En botanique, une stomie est un pore, qui se trouve dans l'épiderme des feuilles, des tiges et d'autres organes qui sert à contrôler l'échange gazeux. Le pore est bordé par une paire de cellules de parenchyme spécialisées appelées cellules de garde qui sont responsables de la régulation de la taille de l'ouverture. Le terme est également utilisé collectivement pour désigner un complexe stomatique entier, à la fois le pore lui-même et ses cellules de garde qui l'accompagnent. L'air contenant du dioxyde de carbone et de l'oxygène entre dans la plante à travers ces ouvertures et est utilisé dans la photosynthèse dans les cellules mésophiles et la respiration, respectivement. L'oxygène produit comme sous-produit de la photosynthèse se diffuse dans l'atmosphère à travers ces mêmes ouvertures. En outre, la vapeur d'eau est libérée dans l'atmosphère à travers ces pores dans un processus appelé transpiration. Stomata sont présents dans la génération sporophyte de tous les groupes de plantes terrestres, à l'exception des hépatiques. Les dicotyledons ont généralement plus de stomates sur l'épiderme inférieur que l'épiderme supérieur. Les monocotylédones, d'autre part, ont généralement le même nombre de stomates sur les deux épidermes.
