Sous-espèce
Dans la classification biologique, la sous-espèce est soit un rang taxonomique subordonné à une espèce, soit une unité taxonomique dans ce rang. Une sous-espèce ne peut être reconnue isolément: une espèce sera soit reconnue comme n'ayant aucune sous-espèce à tout ou à deux ou plus, jamais une seule. En vertu du Code international de la nomenclature zoologique, la sous-espèce est le seul rang taxonomique inférieur à celui des espèces susceptibles de recevoir un nom. En vertu du Code international de nomenclature pour les algues, les champignons et les plantes, d'autres classes infraspécifiques telles que la variété peuvent être nommées. En bactériologie, il existe des recommandations, mais pas des exigences strictes pour reconnaître d'autres filières infraspectives importantes. Un taxonomiste décide de reconnaître ou non la sous-espèce. Une façon courante de décider est que les organismes appartenant à différentes sous-espèces de la même espèce sont capables de se reproduire et de produire des descendants fertiles, mais ils ne se déroulent pas dans la nature en raison de l'isolement géographique ou d'autres facteurs. Les différences entre les sous-espèces sont généralement moins distinctes que les différences entre les espèces.
