La synthèse est l'opération consistant à ajouter une séquence de nombres; Le résultat est leur somme ou total. Si les nombres sont ajoutés séquentiellement de gauche à droite, tout résultat intermédiaire est une somme partielle, une somme de préfixe ou un total de la somme. Les nombres à additionner (appelés additifs, ou parfois sommets) peuvent être des nombres entiers, des nombres rationnels, des nombres réels ou des nombres complexes. Une valeur d'une telle série peut souvent être définie, au moyen d'une limite (bien que parfois la valeur puisse être infinie, et souvent aucune valeur ne résulte). Une autre notion impliquant des limites de sommes finies est l'intégration. Le terme sommation a une signification particulière liée à l'extrapolation dans le contexte de séries divergentes. La sommation de la séquence est une expression dont la valeur est la somme de chacun des membres de la séquence.
