Superinfection
Une surinfection est généralement définie comme une seconde infection superposée à une précédente, en particulier par un agent microbien différent d'origine exogène ou endogène, résistant au traitement utilisé contre la première infection. Un exemple de ceci dans la bactériologie est la prolifération du Clostridium difficile endogène qui se produit suite au traitement par un antibiotique à large spectre. En virologie, la définition est légèrement différente. La surinfection est le processus par lequel une cellule qui a déjà été infectée par un virus est co-infectée par une souche différente du virus, ou d'un autre virus, à un moment ultérieur. Les super-infections virales peuvent être résistantes au médicament antiviral ou aux médicaments utilisés pour traiter l'infection initiale. Les superinfectons viraux peuvent également être moins sensibles à la réponse immunitaire de l'hôte.
