Les tensors sont des objets géométriques qui décrivent des relations linéaires entre vecteurs, scalaires et autres tenseurs. Les exemples élémentaires de ces relations comprennent le produit point, le produit croisé et les cartes linéaires. Les vecteurs et les scalaires eux-mêmes sont également des tenseurs. Un tenseur peut être représenté sous la forme d'un tableau multidimensionnel de valeurs numériques. L'ordre d'un tenseur est la dimensionnalité du réseau nécessaire pour le représenter ou, de manière équivalente, le nombre d'indices requis pour étiqueter un composant de ce tableau. Par exemple, une carte linéaire peut être représentée par une matrice et donc un tenseur de 2ème ordre. Un vecteur peut être représenté comme une matrice à 1 dimension et est un tenseur de 1er ordre. Les scalaires sont des nombres uniques et sont donc des tenseurs de 0ème ordre. Les tensors sont utilisés pour représenter les correspondances entre des ensembles de vecteurs géométriques. Par exemple, le tenseur de contrainte de Cauchy T prend une direction v en entrée et produit la tension T sur la surface normale à ce vecteur pour la sortie, exprimant ainsi une relation entre ces deux vecteurs, représentée sur la figure.
