Le terme «Troisième monde» est apparu pendant la guerre froide pour définir des pays qui ne sont alignés ni avec l'OTAN, ni avec le Bloc communiste. Cette terminologie a permis de classer en grande partie les nations de la Terre en trois groupes basés sur des divisions sociales, politiques, culturelles et économiques. On considérait normalement le tiers monde parmi de nombreux pays avec des passages coloniaux en Afrique, en Amérique latine, en Océanie et en Asie. Il a également été parfois considéré comme synonyme de pays dans le Mouvement des pays non-alignés. Dans la soi-disant théorie de la dépendance des penseurs comme Raul Prebisch, Walter Rodney, Theotonio dos Santos et Andre Gunder Frank, le Tiers Monde a également été connecté à la division économique mondiale en tant que pays de «périphérie» dans le système mondial dominé par Les pays «centraux». En raison de l'histoire complexe des significations et des contextes évolutifs, il n'y a pas de définition claire ou convenue du tiers monde. Certains pays du bloc communiste, comme Cuba, étaient souvent considérés comme «le tiers monde».
