L'hormone thyroïdienne
Les hormones thyroïdiennes, la triiodothyronine et sa prohormone, la thyroxine, sont des hormones à base de tyrosine produites par la glande thyroïde qui sont principalement responsables de la régulation du métabolisme. L'iode est nécessaire pour la production de T3 et de T4. Une carence en iode conduit à une diminution de la production de T3 et de T4, augmente le tissu thyroïdien et causera la maladie connue sous le nom de goitre. La principale forme d'hormone thyroïdienne dans le sang est la thyroxine, qui a une demi-vie plus longue que T3. Le rapport de T4 à T3 libéré dans le sang est d'environ 20 à 1. T4 est converti en T3 actif dans les cellules par les désiodineses. Ceux-ci sont encore traités par la décarboxylation et la déshydratation pour produire de l'iodothyronamine et de la thyronamine. Les trois isoformes des désiodines sont des enzymes contenant du sélénium, donc le sélénium alimentaire est essentiel à la production de T3.
