Dans la chimie analytique, un oligo-élément est un élément d'un échantillon qui a une concentration moyenne inférieure à 100 parties par million mesurée en nombre atomique ou inférieure à 100 microgrammes par gramme. En biochimie, un oligo-élément est un minéral alimentaire qui est nécessaire en très petites quantités pour la bonne croissance, le développement et la physiologie de l'organisme. En géochimie, un oligo-élément est un élément chimique dont la concentration est inférieure à 1000 ppm ou 0,1% de la composition d'une roche. Le terme est utilisé principalement dans la pétrologie ignée. Les éléments de traçage préféreront la phase liquide ou solide. Si elle est compatible avec un minéral, elle préférera une phase solide. Si elle est incompatible avec un élément, elle préférera une phase liquide. La mesure de ce ratio est connue sous le nom de coefficient de partage. Les éléments de traces peuvent être substitués aux cations formant des réseaux dans les structures minérales. Les minéraux ne doivent pas contenir d'oligo-éléments, c'est-à-dire qu'ils ne doivent pas apparaître dans la formule chimique du minéral. Lors de la pratique de l'agriculture biodynamique, il est important d'utiliser les oligo-éléments du sol, afin de renforcer les racines.
