Leon Trotsky (Russe: Лев Давидович Троцкий; prononcé (écouter), né Lev Davidovich Bronshtein, 7 novembre 1879 - 21 août 1940) était un révolutionnaire marxiste russe et théoricien, politicien soviétique et fondateur et premier chef de l'Armée rouge. Trotsky était d'abord un partisan de la faction menchevik internationaliste du Parti travailliste social-démocrate russe. Il s'est joint aux bolcheviks immédiatement avant la révolution d'octobre 1917 et est finalement devenu un chef de file au sein du Parti. Pendant les premiers jours de l'Union soviétique, il a servi en tant que commissaire populaire pour les affaires étrangères et plus tard comme fondateur et commandant de l'armée rouge en tant que commissaire populaire des affaires militaires et navales. Il a été une figure majeure dans la victoire bolchevik dans la guerre civile russe (1918-23). Il était également parmi les premiers membres du Politburo.
