Temps universel
Le temps universel est une norme de temps basée sur la rotation de la Terre. C'est une continuation moderne de Greenwich Mean Time, c'est-à-dire le temps solaire moyen sur le Prime Meridian à Greenwich, et GMT est parfois utilisé comme synonyme pour UTC. En fait, l'expression "Temps universel" est ambiguë, car il existe plusieurs versions, la plus couramment utilisée étant UTC et UT1. Toutes ces versions de UT sont basées sur la rotation de la Terre par rapport aux objets célestes éloignés, mais avec un facteur de mise à l'échelle et d'autres ajustements pour les rapprocher de l'heure solaire.

La définition du temps universel dans le dictionnaire est un nom adopté internationalement pour Greenwich Mean Time, maintenant divisé en plusieurs échelles légèrement différentes, dont l'une est utilisée par les astronomes UT. Une autre définition du temps universel est également appelée: temps coordonné universel. Un système international de chronométrage civil introduit en 1960 et redéfini en 1972 en tant qu'horaire atomique. Disponible à partir des signaux de diffusion, il a une seconde égale à l'heure atomique internationale seconde, la différence entre UTC et TAI étant un nombre entier de secondes avec secondes intercalaires insérées si nécessaire pour le garder dans les 0,9 secondes de UT1 UTC.
