Zone Vadose
La zone vadose, également appelée zone insaturée, est la partie de la Terre entre la surface terrestre et le sommet de la zone phréatique, c'est-à-dire la position à laquelle l'eau souterraine est à la pression atmosphérique. Par conséquent, la zone vadose s'étend du haut de la surface du sol à la nappe phréatique. L'eau dans la zone vadose a une pression inférieure à la pression atmosphérique et est retenue par une combinaison d'adhérence et d'action capillaire. Si la zone vadose enveloppe le sol, l'eau contenue dans celle-ci est appelée humidité du sol. Dans les sols à grain fin, l'action capillaire peut provoquer la saturation complète des pores du sol au-dessus de la nappe phréatique à une pression inférieure à la pression atmosphérique. La zone vadose ne comprend pas la zone encore saturée au-dessus de la nappe phréatique, souvent appelée frange capillaire. Le mouvement de l'eau dans la zone de Vadose est étudié dans la physique des sols et l'hydrologie, en particulier l'hydrogéologie, et est important pour l'agriculture, le transport de contaminants et le contrôle des inondations. L'équation de Richards est souvent utilisée pour décrire mathématiquement le flux d'eau, qui repose partiellement sur la loi de Darcy.
