En informatique, la mémoire virtuelle est une technique de gestion de la mémoire mise en œuvre en utilisant à la fois le matériel et les logiciels. Il mappe les adresses de mémoire utilisées par un programme, appelé adresses virtuelles, dans des adresses physiques dans la mémoire de l'ordinateur. Le stockage principal tel que vu par un processus ou une tâche apparaît comme un espace d'adressage contigu ou une collection de segments contigus. Le système d'exploitation gère les espaces d'adresses virtuels et l'affectation de la mémoire réelle à la mémoire virtuelle. Le matériel de traduction d'adresses dans la CPU, souvent appelé unité de gestion de mémoire ou MMU, traduit automatiquement les adresses virtuelles en adresses physiques. Le logiciel dans le système d'exploitation peut étendre ces fonctionnalités pour fournir un espace d'adresse virtuel qui peut dépasser la capacité de la mémoire réelle et donc faire référence à plus de mémoire que présente physiquement dans l'ordinateur. Les principaux avantages de la mémoire virtuelle incluent la libération des applications pour gérer un espace de mémoire partagé, une sécurité accrue en raison de l'isolement de la mémoire et l'utilisation conceptuelle d'une mémoire supplémentaire qui pourrait être physiquement disponible, en utilisant la technique de la pagination.
