Discours visible
Le discours visible est le système d'écriture utilisé par Alexander Melville Bell, connu internationalement comme professeur de discours et élocution propre et auteur de livres sur le sujet. Le système est composé de symboles qui montrent la position et le mouvement de la gorge, de la langue et des lèvres en produisant les sons du langage, et c'est un type de notation phonétique. Le système a été utilisé pour aider les sourds à apprendre à parler. En 1864, Melville a promu ses premières œuvres sur Visible Speech, afin d'aider les sourds à apprendre et à améliorer leur discours. Pour aider à promouvoir la langue, Bell a créé deux formes courtes écrites utilisant son système de 29 modificateurs et tonalités, 52 consonnes, 36 voyelles et une douzaine de diptonges: on les appelait l'anglais du monde, semblable à l'alphabet phonétique international, et aussi l'écriture de lignes , Utilisé comme forme abrégée pour les sténographes. Les travaux de Melville sur Visible Speech sont devenus très remarquables et ont été décrits par Édouard Seguin comme étant «... une invention plus vaste que le téléphone par son fils, Alexander Graham Bell». Melville a vu de nombreuses applications pour son invention, y compris son utilisation mondiale comme langue universelle.
