Théologie de Huldrych Zwingli
La théologie de Huldrych Zwingli était basée sur la Bible, en prenant les Écritures comme le mot inspiré de Dieu et en plaçant son autorité plus élevée que les sources humaines telles que les conseils œcuméniques et les pères de l'église. Il a également reconnu l'élément humain dans l'inspiration notant les différences dans les évangiles canoniques. Le zwinglianisme est la confession réformée basée sur la deuxième confession helvétique promulguée par le successeur de Zwingli, Heinrich Bullinger, dans les années 1560. Les vues de Zwingli sur le baptême ont été en grande partie une réponse à l'anabaptisme, un mouvement qui a attaqué la pratique du baptême des enfants. Il a défendu le baptême des enfants en le décrivant comme un signe de l'alliance d'un chrétien avec Dieu, tout comme Dieu a fait une alliance avec Abraham. Il a développé la vision symbolique de l'Eucharistie. Il a nié la doctrine catholique de la transsubstantiation et, suite à Cornelius Henrici Hoen, il a convenu que le pain et le vin de l'institution signifient et ne deviennent pas littéralement le corps et le sang de Jésus-Christ. Les différences d'opinion de Zwingli à propos de cela avec Martin Luther ont entraîné l'échec du Colloque de Marburg à apporter l'unité entre les deux dirigeants protestants.
