Les gènes sont des séquences linéaires d'ADN qui sont des unités fonctionnelles sur les chromosomes ou les plasmides. Toute l'information sur la structure et la fonction d'un organisme est codée dans ses gènes. Pour certaines informations codées par des gènes ne détermine qu'une seule caractéristique, mais certains locus du même gène peuvent porter des informations différentes. Les gènes ayant des informations différentes sur le même locus sont appelés allèles.
