Rome est la capitale de l'Italie et la ville la plus grande et la plus peuplée du pays, avec plus de 2,7 millions d'habitants dans une municipalité d'environ 1.285,3 km2, alors que la population urbaine est estimée à 3,46 millions par Eurostat. L'OCDE estime que la zone métropolitaine de Rome compte 3,7 millions d'habitants. La ville est située au milieu du milieu de la péninsule italienne, sur le Tibre. Rome est aussi souvent associée à l'Église catholique romaine et à son chef évêque, le pape. Une enclave romaine est le Royaume du Vatican, le territoire souverain du Saint-Siège et le plus petit pays du monde. Comme l'une des grandes villes d'Europe a survécu à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Rome a été essentiellement conservée avec des caractéristiques Renaissance et baroques comme d'habitude. Rome est la troisième destination touristique la plus visitée de l'Union européenne et le centre historique figure sur la liste de l'UNESCO parmi les sites du patrimoine mondial. Comme une ville moderne il est devenu la capitale de l'Italie depuis 1870, et a grandi principalement en deux périodes d'un côté de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
