Officier de la Cour Uni-Egyptienne et haut commandant militaire de la première période de la VIe dynastie, soumis et confié à Pepi I et son fils Merenre I. Initialement, il était un fonctionnaire royal de rang inférieur qui était le surintendant des petits agriculteurs. Il fut ensuite rassuré par le souverain Pepi I, qui le chargea d'enquêter sur le complot du harem, initié par Nubunet, la première épouse du souverain, et dirigé contre le souverain. Ses capacités et ses mérites furent grandement appréciés par le dirigeant, qui passa ensuite de l'administration à l'armée et fut nommé commandant des expéditions de guerre dans le sud de la Palestine et du Sinaï, menant la multitude de milliers rassemblés de toute l'Egypte. Il a mené 5 expéditions contre les Bédouins, mais n'a pas obtenu le plein succès, a décidé de mettre ses troupes sur les navires et attaquer l'ennemi par derrière. Les troupes égyptiennes ont débarqué dans le sud de la Palestine, ont attaqué les Bédouins de façon inattendue et les ont complètement détruites.

Początkowo był urzędnikiem królewskim niskiej rangi, pełniącym urząd przełożonego drobnych rolników. Cieszył się już wówczas zaufaniem władcy Pepiego I, który wyznaczył go do zbadania sprawy spisku haremowego, zainicjowanego przez Nubunet, pierwszą żonę władcy, a skierowanego przeciwko panującemu. Jego zdolności i zasługi zostały wysoko ocenione przez władcę, gdyż następnie przeszedł z administracji do wojska i został wyznaczony na dowódcę wypraw wojennych do południowej Palestyny i na Synaj, stając na czele wielotysięcznych oddziałów zebranych z całego Egiptu. Poprowadził 5 wypraw przeciwko Beduinom, nie osiągnął jednak pełnego sukcesu, postanowił umieścić swoje oddziały na statkach i zaatakować wroga od tyłu. Oddziały egipskie wylądowały w południowej Palestynie, zaatakowały niespodziewanie Beduinów i zniszczyły ich doszczętnie.
