Alsazia è la quinta più piccola delle 27 regioni francesi in area di terra (8.280 km2), l'Alsazia (francese: Alsazia (ascolta), Alsazia: Elsass, tedesco: Elsass, pre-1996: Elsaß (ascolta) , E il più piccolo nella metropolitana francese. È anche la regione settima più densamente popolata in Francia e la terza regione più densamente popolata in Francia metropolitana, con ca. 220 abitanti per km2 (popolazione totale nel 2006: 1.815.488; 1 gennaio 2008 stima: 1.836.000). L'Alsazia si trova sul confine orientale della Francia e sulla riva occidentale del Reno superiore adiacente alla Germania e alla Svizzera. Le decisioni storiche, le guerre e la politica strategica hanno portato all'amministrazione di Alsazia come "regione" all'interno della Repubblica di Francia. La capitale politica, economica e culturale e la città più grande d'Alsazia è Strasburgo. Poiché quella città è sede di decine di organizzazioni e organizzazioni internazionali, l'Alsazia è politicamente una delle regioni più importanti dell'Unione europea. Il nome "Alsazia" può essere ricondotto al Vecchio Alto-tedesco Ali-saz o Elisaz, che significa "dominio straniero".
