L'apostrofo è un segno di punteggiatura, e talvolta un segno diacritico, nelle lingue che utilizzano l'alfabeto latino o alcuni altri alfabeti. In inglese, serve tre scopi: ▪ la marcatura dell'omissione di una o più lettere. ▪ la marcatura del caso possessivo. ▪ La marcatura di alcuni come pluralità di voci scritte che non sono parole stabilite in ortografia inglese. Secondo l'Oxford English Dictionary, "apostrofo" viene in definitiva dal greco ἡ ἀπόστροφος, attraverso il latino e il francese. L'apostrofo ha lo stesso aspetto di una singola virgoletta di chiusura, sebbene abbia significati diversi. L'apostrofo appare simile, ma non è lo stesso del simbolo principale, che viene utilizzato per indicare la misura in piedi o in arcminute, nonché per vari scopi matematici, e la'kaina, che rappresenta una fermata glottale nelle lingue polinesiane. Tali sostituzioni erronee come 'e' sono comuni nei testi non professionali, dove un trattamento ambiguo dell'apposito nella composizione digitale è un fattore importante di questa confusione.
