L'atomo è una filosofia naturale che si è sviluppata in diverse antiche tradizioni. Gli atomisti hanno teorizzato che la natura consiste in due principi fondamentali: atomo e vuoto. A differenza del loro omaggio scientifico moderno nella teoria atomica, gli atomi filosofici vengono in una varietà infinita di forme e dimensioni, ognuna indistruttibile, immutabile e circondata da un vuoto dove si scontrano con gli altri o agganciano insieme formando un cluster. I cluster di diverse forme, disposizioni e posizioni danno origine alle varie sostanze macroscopiche del mondo. I riferimenti al concetto di atomismo e dei suoi atomi si trovano nell'antica India e nell'antica Grecia. In India le scuole di atomismo di Jain, Ajivika e Carvaka risalgono al VI secolo aC. Le scuole Nyaya e Vaisheshika svilupparono successivamente teorie su come gli atomi si combinano in oggetti più complessi. In Occidente, l'atomismo è emerso nel V secolo aC con Leucippus e Democrito. Se la cultura indiana ha influenzato il greco o viceversa o se sia evoluto in modo indipendente è una questione di disputa.
