Il Bacillus è un genere di batteri gram-positivi, a forma di bastoncello e membro del Firmicutes del phylum. Le specie di Bacillus possono essere obbligate aerobes o anaerobi facoltativi. Testanno positivi per la catalasi dell'enzima quando è stata utilizzata o presente ossigeno. Ubisposte in natura, Bacillus comprende sia le specie patogene libere che parassitarie. In condizioni ambientali stressanti, i batteri possono produrre endospori ovali che non sono vere spore ma che i batteri possono ridursi e rimanere in stato dormiente per lunghi periodi. Queste caratteristiche hanno originariamente definito il genere, ma non tutte queste specie sono strettamente correlate e molti sono stati trasferiti ad altri generi di Firmicutes. Molte specie di Bacillus possono produrre grandi quantità di enzimi che vengono utilizzati in diverse industrie. Alcune specie di Bacillus possono formare inclusioni intracellulari di polihydroxyalkanoates in determinate condizioni ambientali avverse, come in una mancanza di elementi come il fosforo, l'azoto o l'ossigeno combinati con un'eccessiva disponibilità di fonti di carbonio. B.subtilis ha dimostrato un valido modello di ricerca.
