Bactria è il nome antico di una regione storica situata a sud di Amu Darya e ad ovest di Gandhara. L'antico Bactria era nell'attuale Afghanistan settentrionale, tra la catena montuosa Hindu Kush e l'Amu Darya. Una volta Zoroastrian, questa regione successivamente ospitava il buddismo prima di diventare musulmano dopo l'arrivo dei Rashiduns e Umayyads nel VII secolo.
