Barbital o barbitone, commercializzato sotto i marchi Veronal per l'acido puro e Medinale per il sale sodico, è stato il primo barbiturato commercialmente disponibile. È stato utilizzato come aiuto per il sonno dal 1903 fino alla metà degli anni '50. I nomi chimici del barbitone sono l'urea dietilmalonilica o l'acido dietilbarribiturico; Di conseguenza, il sale sodico, è noto anche come sodio dietilbaribiturico. Il Barbitone è stato preparato condensando l'estere dietilmalonico con urea in presenza di etossido di sodio e quindi aggiungendo almeno due equivalenti molari di etil ioduro al sale d'argento di malonilurea o eventualmente ad una soluzione di base dell'acido. Il risultato era una polvere bianca cristallina, inodora, leggermente amara.
