Un CAPTCHA è un tipo di test di risposta sfida utilizzati nel calcolo per determinare se l'utente è umano o meno. Il termine è stato coniato nel 2000 da Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper dell'Università Carnegie Mellon e John Langford di IBM. Il tipo più comune di CAPTCHA fu inventato per la prima volta da Mark D. Lillibridge, Martin Abadi, Krishna Bharat e Andrei Z. Broder. Questa forma di CAPTCHA richiede che l'utente digita le lettere di un'immagine distorta, a volte con l'aggiunta di una sequenza oscurata di lettere o di cifre che appaiono sullo schermo. Poiché il test viene somministrato da un computer, in contrasto con il test Turing standard che viene somministrato da un essere umano, CAPTCHA viene talvolta descritto come un test Turing inverso.
